[Update 19 Jan 2012]

Big thanks to all our users for supporting and understanding our stance. Your supportive tweets, link backs, and words of encouragement are greatly appreciated. We’ve reverted chat bubbles back to the default orange for all users.

If you, like ourselves, wish to carry on protesting the bill, and raise the black flag to SOPA, you can carry on showing the black chat bubble by pasting this piece of code after the original Zopim code.

<script>
$zopim(function(){
  $zopim.livechat.bubble.setColor('#000000');
})
</script>

On a sidenote, we have completed our donation of $5000 to EFF in support of their fight against irresponsible legislation. If you’d like to contribute as well, do drop by their site as well =)

Dear Internet / Zopim users,

As we blogged earlier, US Congress is considering passing SOPA, (Stop Online Piracy Act), a badly drafted proposed bill that allows owners of intellectual property to block ANY website that they consider infringes on their intellectual property.

To raise awareness against this bill, many influential Internet companies (such as Wikipedia, CloudFlare) have lent support to a movement to Blackout the Internet today (18th Jan 2012). While we applaud their efforts, we also have the responsibility to you, our customers to ensure our service is running 100%. Blacking out our site / service is not an option for us.

To do our part in raising awareness, and to mark the dark period that could engulf the Internet should the bill pass, we have decided to replace all default (orange) chat bubble with a black bubble for one day.
[ending at 18 Jan – 11.59PM PST]

Many of you have applauded and supported our anti-SOPA stance, and we hope to have your backing once again for this symbolic stance* (even if it’s only for a day).

* We understand that not all our users are anti-SOPA, and we respect your views as well. For those who wish to restore the colour of the chat bubbles, you can get the original chat bubble back by pasting this script below our original script.

If you are experiencing difficulties restoring the colour, do chat up our CSRs. Appreciate your understanding! Also, if you’ve explicitly set your help bubble color, you will not be affected by this at all.

<script>
$zopim(function(){
  $zopim.livechat.iLove && $zopim.livechat.iLove('Zopim Orange Bubble');
})
</script>

Earlier, we also announced we will be donating part of our proceeds to the good folks at the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF). We initially pledged to donate 10% of our proceeds from new signups using the discount code “SOPASUCKS”.

Well, we’ve decided to up the ante, and donate 10% of proceeds from all new signups since our blog post! On top of that, we’re topping the amount up to a round USD 5000. While the amount may be modest, we’re proud to have done our part in raising awareness.
